Join editor Marina Green and critically acclaimed authors Lyndall Clipstone and Hannah Long for engaging workshops focused on enhancing and refining your first chapter.

There are two sessions to choose from (or you can take both!) and each workshop offers participants the opportunity to share their first chapters in a supportive environment, receive constructive feedback from peers, a critically acclaimed author, and a Big Five editor.

Throughout both sessions, we will focus on key elements such as character development, plot structure, and pacing, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. Participants will have a month to read and take notes on their peers’ chapters for discussion to facilitate engaging dialogue that fosters growth and story inspiration! Never critiqued before? Don’t worry. Marina will provide her handy guide on critiquing that you can use even beyond the workshop. Participants will provide at least one page of constructive feedback for fellow participants. This will be due to the Google Drive two weeks after the live session takes place.

Whether you are a seasoned writer or just beginning your journey, this workshop aims to provide valuable insights and practical tools to elevate your writing. Join us for an enriching experience that champions creativity and constructive critique.

Meet your Semester One co-host…

Lyndall Clipstone is the author of haunting, ethereal (Hannah Whitten, NYT bestselling author of For the Wolf), bloodied but gorgeous (Victoria Mier, bookseller at The Spiral Bookcase) books, with prose that reads like a hypnotic incantation (Kirkus).

A former youth librarian who grew up running wild in the Barossa Ranges of South Australia, she currently lives in Adelaide, in a hundred-year-old cottage with her partner, two children, and a shy black cat.

Meet your Semester Two co-host…

Hannah (H. M.) Long is a Canadian fantasy author. She inhabits a ramshackle cabin in Ontario with her family, but she can often be spotted snooping about museums or wandering the Alps.

Hannah writes for Titan Books and is the author of the Four Pillars Quartet (Hall of Smoke), the Winter Sea Trilogy (Dark Water Daughter), the Entwined Duology (2026), Ashmarked (2027), and more.

Meet your host…

In conjunction with founding and running her own vibrant freelance business here at Marina Edits, she works in editorial at Harlequin.

She is always either editing, reading, or writing stories, but when she isn’t immersing herself in books and words and magical worlds, you can find her with a cup of tea in hand, trying a new yoga asana—never at the same time—or practicing Armenian, the language of her ancestors.
